Submarine landforms

Clasification of landforms is based on the main mechanism of their formation (genesis). Landscape forms are drawn as polygon and/or line objects. The list contain only the types of forms that are mapped and interpreted in Norwegian waters. For full list of landforms defined in SOSI catalogue, read Løsmassegeologi (Superficial geology)

Grounding zone wedgeWedge-shaped ridge that is formed at the front of a glacier during periods of standstill or minor advances of a glacier.970
Area with corrugation ridgesAn area with a series of small elongate ridges, produced at tidally influenced ice sheets margin or floating icebergs grounding line.971
Glacitectonic hillHills and ridges formed by glacier that transports and leaves behind big blocks or slabs of the seabed. 911
Glacitectonic holeHole (depression) formed by moving glacier that and rips off and removes of big, typically sheet-formed slabs from the seabed.913
Dead ice landscapeLandscape with irregular hills and holes formed by melting of the stagnant ice.8
Grounded iceberg depressionDepression in the seabed formed by a grounded iceberg that stayed immobile.910
Slide block Sediment packages that have been displaced during a landslide event and carried down a slope by gravity. Such landslide mobilized sediment blocks occur mainly under water, but can also be found in permafrost areas on land.966
Landslide fanFan-shaped depositional area of a slide.301
Slide areaLandscape formed by a landslide; can include slide hollow, slide run and slide fan.951
Slide, burriedLandslide burried under younger sediments (paleoslide).951
Area with slide deposits, unspecifiedArea with uneven surface due to unspecified slide deposits on the seabed.40

FORMELLIN
Drumlin An elongated hill, streamlined in the direction of ice flow and composed largely of glacial deposits. 1
Drumlin-like form Unclear elongated landform, streamlined in the direction of ice flow. 2

Ice-marginal moraine Moraine ridge formed along an ice margin. Includes end, lateral and terminal moraines. 3

Recessional moraine Moraine ridge deposited at the ice margin during av small re-advance or standstill of the ice margin during general ice retreat. 8
Morene ridge Ridge-shaped moraine deposit. 9
Crevasse-fill ridge Moraine ridge formed subglacially by sqeezing of till into basal crevasses. Related to stagnant ice. 7
Parallel ridges and grooves on the surface Elongated parallel ridges and grooves on a surface. Ridges and grooves are oriented parallel to the direction of former ice movement. Low relief and little width in relation to length. 5

Ridge, unspecified Clear ridge of unspecified origin on the seabed. 920
Terrace edge, glaciogenic Steep slope marking the edge of a terrace made up of sorted sediment; formed in a glacial environment. 52
Glaciotectonic escarpment Steep slope formed where a glacier has removed a slab of the seabed. 53
Iceberg ploughmark Elongated scour formed by the movement of a grounded iceberg in the sea or a lake.44
Esker (glaciofluvial ridge) Elongate sinuous ridge of glaciofluvial sediment deposited in ice-walled meltwater channels or sub-glacial tunnels. 12
Glacial meltwater channel Channel formed by glaciofluvial erosion. 21
Tunnel valley Channels developed under an ice sheet, where meltwater under high pressure has eroded valleys into underlying sediments and/or sedimentary rocks. 933
Landslide scarp The back wall of a landslide; formed by different types of landslide, in both bedrock and unconsolidated sediment. 306
Sheet-shaped landslide scarp (subaqueous) Escarpment behind sheet-formed submarine landslide. 309
Border of mass-wasting fan Border of colluvial, debris flow or snow avalanche fan. Not linked to any one specific process. 301
Plunge pool (subaqueous) Hollow formed by landslide at the foot of a submarine slope. 308
Landslide front (subaqueous) Front of submarine landslide. Marks the outer margin of a submarine landslide. 310
Rock avalanche terminus Outer limit of rock avalanche deposit. 305
Debris flow levee A small ridge deposited along the margin of a debris flow track. 312
Sediment wave Large-scale landform on the seabed created by bottom currents. The crest of the wave usually has an orientation perpendicular to the current direction. 923
Current channel Channel on the seabed formed by bottom currents. 921
Furrow, unspecified Long narrow depressions on the seabed with unspecified origin. 922
Ravine V-shaped erosional channel with steep slopes, formed in sediments. 107
Fan shape Fan shaped deposit, mainly formed by flowing water. 106
Terrace edge Steep slope marking the edge of a terrace surface. 108
Edge, unspecified Edge in unconsolidated deposits of uncertain origin (f.ex. due to a landslide, current or a combination of processes) 927
Channel, unspesified (subaqueous) Channel on the seabed, origin unspecified. 114
Bedrock crevasse (subaqueous) Crevasse in bedrock at the seabed. 115
Channel margin (subaqueous) Edge of a channel, delimiting its width. 116
Fault (subaqueous) A fracture zone/plane where a measurable/visual displacement of the bedrock have occurred. The direction of the displacement between the fault blocks defines the type of faulting, among which are normal-, reverse-, oblique-, and transverse faulting. 925
Crack (subaqueous) Narrow depression in seabed formed by subsidence of the sediments due to faulting, discharge of gas from dissolution of gas hydrates, or weakened slope stability after a landslide. 926
Cable Anthropogenic landforms created for installing cables on the seabed. 931
